Questions: Quadrilaterals

Q1 What is a quadrilateral? How many diagonals does it have?

Answer (English): A quadrilateral is a closed figure made of four line segments, with four vertices and four interior angles. It has two diagonals, each joining a pair of non-adjacent vertices. The sides must not cross, and the figure must close.

Hinglish: Quadrilateral chaar line segments se bani closed figure hai, jiske chaar vertices aur chaar interior angles hote hain. Isme do diagonals hoti hain, jo non-adjacent vertices ko jodti hain. Sides cross nahi karni chahiye aur figure band honi chahiye.

Q2 Why do the four interior angles of any quadrilateral add up to 360°?

Answer (English): Add one diagonal and the figure falls into two triangles. Each triangle's angles total 180°, and the six angles of those triangles are exactly the four angles of the quadrilateral, so the total is 180 + 180 = 360°.

Hinglish: Ek diagonal kheenchne se quadrilateral do triangles mein bant jata hai. Har triangle ke angles ka sum 180° hota hai, aur dono triangles ke saare angles milakar quadrilateral ke chaar angles bante hain, isliye total 180 + 180 = 360° hota hai.

Q3 How can a rectangle be defined using its diagonals?

Answer (English): One way to define a rectangle uses its diagonals: they must have equal lengths and cut one another into halves. The carpenter problem shows this: two equal strips joined at their midpoints have endpoints that form a rectangle. The usual definition uses four right angles and equal opposite sides; both definitions describe the same family.

Hinglish: Rectangle ko aise quadrilateral se define kar sakte hain jiske diagonals equal hon aur ek doosre ko bisect karein. Carpenter problem isi ko dikhata hai: equal strips ko midpoint par jodne se endpoints rectangle banate hain. Aam definition mein chaar right angles aur equal opposite sides hoti hain; dono definitions same family batati hain.

Q4 What are the properties of a parallelogram?

Answer (English): Opposite sides are equal and parallel, opposite angles are equal, adjacent angles are supplementary, and the diagonals bisect each other. Every rectangle, rhombus and square is a parallelogram, but a parallelogram need not have right angles or equal adjacent sides.

Hinglish: Parallelogram mein opposite sides equal aur parallel hoti hain, opposite angles equal hote hain, adjacent angles 180° ke supplement hote hain, aur diagonals ek doosre ko bisect karti hain. Har rectangle, rhombus aur square parallelogram hai, par har parallelogram ke right angles ya equal adjacent sides zaroori nahi.

Q5 Why is every square a rectangle and a rhombus, but not every rectangle a square?

Answer (English): A square has four right angles, so it satisfies the rectangle definition, and four equal sides, so it satisfies the rhombus definition. A rectangle needs only right angles and can have unequal adjacent sides, and a rhombus needs only equal sides and can have non-right angles.

Hinglish: Square mein chaar right angles hote hain, isliye woh rectangle ki definition satisfy karta hai, aur chaar equal sides hoti hain, isliye rhombus bhi hai. Rectangle mein sirf right angles chahiye, adjacent sides unequal ho sakti hain; rhombus mein sirf equal sides chahiye, angles 90° zaroori nahi.

Q6 What is a kite and what does its main diagonal do?

Answer (English): Think of a kite as a four-sided figure whose equal sides come in two separate neighbouring pairs. The diagonal joining the vertices where the equal pairs meet bisects the other diagonal at right angles and bisects the angles at its own ends.

Hinglish: Kite aisa quadrilateral hai jisme adjacent equal sides ke do non-overlapping pairs hote hain. Jo diagonal equal pairs ke beech wale vertices ko jodti hai, woh doosri diagonal ko 90° par bisect karti hai aur apne dono ends ke angles ko bhi bisect karti hai.

Q7 How do you find the remaining angles in a trapezium?

Answer (English): For a trapezium, take the two parallel sides. At either end, the two angles that sit on the same side of a line cutting across the parallel sides sum to 180°. Subtract the given angle from 180° to find its partner. In an isosceles trapezium, the angles opposite the equal non-parallel sides are also equal.

Hinglish: Parallel sides ke same side wale co-interior angles 180° ke hote hain. Diya hua angle 180° se ghatakar doosra angle nikalta hai. Isosceles trapezium mein equal non-parallel sides ke opposite angles bhi barabar hote hain.

Q8 What is the difference between a conjecture and a proof?

Answer (English): A conjecture is a statement believed true after testing examples; measurement supports it but does not guarantee it for every case. A proof derives the statement from definitions and earlier proved results using logic, so it holds for every figure in the family.

Hinglish: Conjecture woh statement hai jo kuch examples dekhkar sach lagta hai; measurement usse support karta hai par har case ke liye guarantee nahi deta. Proof statement ko definitions aur pehle prove kiye gaye results se logic ke through derive karta hai, isliye woh family ke har figure ke liye sach hota hai.

Q9 Why is a quadrilateral with equal opposite angles a parallelogram?

Answer (English): If ∠A = ∠C and ∠B = ∠D, then 2∠A + 2∠B = 360°, so ∠A + ∠B = 180°. These are co-interior angles for AD and BC with transversal AB, so AD is parallel to BC. The same reasoning gives AB parallel to DC, so both pairs of opposite sides are parallel.

Hinglish: Agar ∠A = ∠C aur ∠B = ∠D, to 2∠A + 2∠B = 360°, isliye ∠A + ∠B = 180°. Yeh AD aur BC ke liye transversal AB par co-interior angles hain, isliye AD || BC. Isi tarah AB || DC milta hai, isliye dono opposite side pairs parallel hain aur figure parallelogram hai.

Q10 How do you construct a square from a diagonal without a protractor?

Answer (English): Draw the diagonal and find its midpoint. Construct the perpendicular bisector with a compass and mark equal half-diagonal lengths on it on both sides of the midpoint. Join the four endpoints. The diagonals are equal, bisect each other and meet at 90°, which forces a square.

Hinglish: Diagonal kheencho aur uska midpoint nikaalo. Compass se perpendicular bisector banao aur midpoint ke dono taraf half-diagonal ke barabar marks lagao. Chaar endpoints ko jodo. Diagonals equal hain, ek doosre ko bisect karti hain aur 90° par milti hain, isliye figure square banti hai.

The five-question quiz for this chapter is separate. Take it without scrolling back to these answers, then revisit any question you missed. For proofs, practise writing the triangle names and the congruence condition, because that is where most marks are won or lost.
