Questions: Our home, Earth

Our Home: Earth, a Unique Life-Sustaining Planet18 min readLesson 5 of 5

Q1. Why is Earth considered a unique planet?

Answer (English): Earth is the only planet we know where life exists and thrives. It lies in the habitable zone, where liquid water can remain, and its nearly circular orbit keeps sunlight steady through the year. It is also the right size for gravity to hold an atmosphere, and oxygen, the ozone layer and a magnetic field add further protection. The four spheres of air, water, land and life interact to keep conditions suitable. These conditions together make Earth a unique life-sustaining planet.

Hinglish: Earth hi aisa planet hai jahan hum jaante hain life exist karti hai aur badhti hai. Ye habitable zone mein hai jahan paani liquid reh sakta hai, iski orbit lagbhag circular hai isliye sunlight steady rehti hai, aur size sahi hai isliye gravity atmosphere pakad leti hai. Oxygen, ozone layer aur magnetic field extra protection dete hain, aur air, water, land aur life ke four spheres milkar life sustain karte hain.

Q2. What is the greenhouse effect? Why is Venus hotter than Mercury?

Answer (English): The greenhouse effect is the trapping of heat by gases such as carbon dioxide in a planet's atmosphere. These gases absorb the radiation a planet gives off after being warmed by the Sun and hold the heat near the surface. Venus has a very thick carbon-dioxide atmosphere, so it traps heat extremely well and is the hottest planet. Mercury is closer to the Sun but has no atmosphere to trap heat.

Hinglish: Greenhouse effect tab hota hai jab carbon dioxide jaisi gases planet ke atmosphere mein heat trap karti hain. Ye gases Sun se garam hone ke baad planet ki nikalti radiation ko absorb karke heat surface ke paas rokti hain. Venus ka atmosphere bahut thick CO2 ka hai, isliye woh heat ko bahut achhe se trap karta hai aur Venus sabse garam planet hai. Mercury closer hai par uske paas heat trap karne ka atmosphere hi nahi hai.

Q3. How does Earth's size help it support life?

Answer (English): Earth's size gives it enough gravity to hold a layer of gases around it as an atmosphere. If Earth were smaller, the weaker gravity would let the atmosphere escape into space. If it were much larger, the stronger gravity would press on living bodies with crushing force. The right size keeps Earth's atmosphere, and the life it supports, in place.

Hinglish: Earth ka size itni gravity deta hai ki woh apne chaaron taraf gases ki layer, yaani atmosphere, pakad kar rakh sakta hai. Agar Earth chhota hota to weak gravity se atmosphere space mein chala jaata. Agar bahut bada hota to strong gravity living bodies ko crush kar deti. Sahi size Earth ke atmosphere aur life ko jagah par baandhe rakhta hai.

Q4. What are the roles of the ozone layer and Earth's magnetic field?

Answer (English): The ozone layer is made of a three-atom form of oxygen. It blocks harmful ultraviolet radiation, which can damage living cells. Earth's magnetic field, produced by the movement of molten iron in the core, pushes away many high-energy particles such as cosmic rays and the solar wind. Without these shields, the atmosphere and life would be exposed to harmful radiation.

Hinglish: Ozone layer oxygen ke three-atom form se banti hai. Ye Sun ki harmful ultraviolet radiation ko rokti hai jo living cells ko nuksan pahuncha sakti hai. Earth ka magnetic field, jo core mein molten iron ke movement se banta hai, cosmic rays aur solar wind jaise high-energy particles ko door dhakelta hai. In shields ke bina atmosphere aur life harmful radiation ke saamne khuli ho jaati.

Q5. Name the four spheres of Earth and give one role of each.

Answer (English): The atmosphere supplies oxygen for respiration and carbon dioxide for photosynthesis, and it carries water vapour for rain. The hydrosphere supplies water for life, transports nutrients in plants and supports aquatic organisms. The geosphere provides soil nutrients and minerals, and its landforms create habitats. The biosphere includes all living things and the places they live, and its interactions keep nutrients cycling.

Hinglish: Atmosphere respiration ke liye oxygen aur photosynthesis ke liye carbon dioxide deta hai, aur rain ke liye water vapour rakhta hai. Hydrosphere life ke liye paani deta hai, plants mein nutrients transport karta hai aur aquatic organisms ko support karta hai. Geosphere soil nutrients aur minerals deta hai, aur iske landforms habitats banate hain. Biosphere mein saare living beings aur unke rehne ki jagah aati hai, aur iske interactions se nutrients recycle hote hain.

Q6. Why is reproduction essential? What are genes?

Answer (English): Reproduction is essential because without it life would eventually disappear. It keeps each kind of organism going and allows small changes to pass to the next generation, so life can adapt. Genes are the instructions stored in every cell that tell the offspring how to develop. They explain why a calf grows into a cow and a kitten into a cat.

Hinglish: Reproduction zaroori hai kyunki iske bina life dheere-dheere khatam ho jaati. Ye har organism ki continuity banaye rakhta hai aur chhote changes agli generation tak pahunchata hai, isliye life adapt kar sakti hai. Genes har cell mein stored instructions hain jo offspring ko batate hain ki kaise develop hona hai. Isi se calf cow aur kitten cat banti hai.

Q7. Differentiate between asexual and sexual reproduction with examples.

Answer (English): In asexual reproduction a single parent produces offspring that are exact copies of itself. Examples include vegetative propagation in plants, bacteria dividing into two, hydra growing buds and planaria regrowing from a fragment. In sexual reproduction two parents produce gametes that carry half their genetic material each, so the offspring combines features of both parents but is not identical to either.

Hinglish: Asexual reproduction mein ek parent offspring banata hai jo bilkul apne jaisa hota hai. Examples: plants mein vegetative propagation, bacteria ka do hisson mein batna, hydra ke buds aur planaria ka fragment se regrow hona. Sexual reproduction mein do parents gametes banate hain jinmein unka aadha genetic material hota hai, isliye offspring dono ke features ka mix hota hai par kisi ek jaisa nahi.

Q8. How does sexual reproduction take place in flowering plants?

Answer (English): The anther of a flower produces pollen grains, the male gametes, and the ovule holds the female gamete. Wind, insects or animals carry pollen to another flower in pollination. When pollen and ovule join, fertilisation forms a zygote that develops into a seed. The part around the ovule becomes the fruit, which helps in seed dispersal, and the seed can grow after germination when it gets water.

Hinglish: Phool ka anther pollen grains banata hai, jo male gametes hain, aur ovule mein female gamete hota hai. Wind, insects ya animals pollen ko doosre phool tak le jaate hain, ise pollination kehte hain. Pollen aur ovule milne par fertilisation hota hai aur zygote banta hai jo seed ban jaata hai. Ovule ke aas-paas ka hissa fruit banta hai jo seed dispersal mein madad karta hai, aur seed paani milne par germinate ho kar ug sakta hai.

Q9. How does animal reproduction differ between frogs and birds?

Answer (English): In frogs, sperm and eggs are released into water and fertilisation happens outside the body. The zygote also develops in water. In birds, fertilisation happens inside the female's body, and the female later lays an egg holding stored food for the developing embryo. The embryo develops during hatching, which is a different way of supplying nutrition from development inside a mammal's body.

Hinglish: Mendhak mein sperm aur eggs paani mein chhode jaate hain aur fertilisation body ke bahar hota hai. Zygote bhi paani mein develop hota hai. Birds mein fertilisation female ki body ke andar hota hai, aur female baad mein egg deti hai jismein developing embryo ke liye stored food hota hai. Embryo hatching ke dauraan develop hota hai, jo mammal ke body ke andar development se alag tarah ki nutrition supply hai.

Q10. What is the triple planetary crisis? Name two agreements and one action to reduce it.

Answer (English): The triple planetary crisis is the combination of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. The Montreal Protocol of 1987 reduced ozone-damaging chemicals, and the Paris Agreement of 2015 aimed to keep global warming below 1.5 °C. One action that helps is switching to renewable energy such as solar and wind, which cuts greenhouse gas emissions; recycling and saving energy also reduce pollution and waste.

Hinglish: Triple planetary crisis teen problems ka mila hua roop hai: climate change, biodiversity loss aur pollution. Montreal Protocol (1987) ne ozone ko nuksan pahunchane wale chemicals kam kiye, aur Paris Agreement (2015) ka laksh ya global warming ko 1.5 °C se neeche rakhna tha. Ek madadgar action hai solar aur wind jaise renewable energy ki taraf badhna, jisse greenhouse gases ghatti hain; recycling aur energy bachana bhi pollution aur waste kam karta hai.
