Q1. How can a magnetic compass show that current is flowing in a circuit?
Answer (English): A compass is placed below a wire that is part of a circuit. When the switch is closed and current flows, the compass needle turns away from its usual direction; when the switch is opened, the needle returns. The deflection shows that a magnetic effect is reaching the needle while the current flows. This is useful because it detects current even when the circuit has no lamp.
Hinglish: Wire ke neeche compass rakho. Switch band karne par current flow hota hai aur needle apni direction se hat jaati hai; switch kholne par needle wapas aa jaati hai. Isse pata chalta hai ki current ke time magnetic effect needle tak pahunch raha hai. Isliye lamp na ho to bhi current detect ho sakta hai.
Q2. What is the magnetic effect of electric current? What is a magnetic field?
Answer (English): A conductor carrying current develops a magnetic field around itself; this is the magnetic effect of electric current. The field is the region where the magnetic effect can be felt, for example by the deflection of a compass needle. The field exists only while the current flows. When the current stops, the field disappears and the compass returns to its original direction. Reversing the cell connections makes the needle deflect the other way, which shows that the direction of the field depends on the direction of the current.
Hinglish: Jab current conductor (wire) se guzarta hai to uske around magnetic field ban jaata hai; ise magnetic effect of electric current kehte hain. Field woh region hai jahan magnetic effect mehsoos hota hai, jaise compass needle ka deflect hona. Field sirf current ke time hota hai; current band hone par gayab ho jaata hai aur needle wapas aa jaati hai.
Q3. Who was Oersted, and how did he discover the link between electricity and magnetism?
Answer (English): Hans Christian Oersted was a professor in Denmark. In 1820, during a demonstration, he noticed that a nearby compass needle deflected whenever an electric circuit was closed or opened. He investigated the observation and published his finding once he was sure that a current produces a magnetic field. Other scientists repeated his experiment, and the link between electricity and magnetism became an important area of study.
Hinglish: Oersted Denmark ke professor the. 1820 mein demonstration ke dauraan unhone dekha ki circuit band ya kholte hi paas rakhi compass needle deflect hoti hai. Unhone is observation ko investigate kiya aur confirm hone par publish kiya ki current magnetic field banata hai. Doosre scientists ne experiment repeat kiya, aur electricity-magnetism ka link aage badha.
Q4. What is an electromagnet? How can its strength be changed?
Answer (English): An electromagnet is a current-carrying coil that behaves like a magnet while current flows through it. Its strength can be increased by passing a larger current, for example by using more cells in the battery, or by increasing the number of turns of wire in the coil. Both changes can be used together. When the current stops, the coil loses its magnetic effect and the electromagnet switches off.
Hinglish: Electromagnet woh current-carrying coil hai jo current ke time magnet ki tarah kaam karta hai. Iski strength badhane ke do tarike hain: zyada current (jaise battery mein zyada cells) aur coil ke turns badhana. Dono ek saath bhi kar sakte hain. Current band hone par coil ka magnetic effect khatam ho jaata hai.
Q5. Why does an electromagnet become stronger when an iron nail is placed inside the coil?
Answer (English): The iron nail acts as a core inside the coil. When current flows, the iron core becomes magnetised and its own magnetism adds to the field of the coil, so the compass deflects more and the coil can pick up more iron clips. For this reason, most practical electromagnets use an iron core. Without the core the coil still behaves as a magnet, but the effect is weaker.
Hinglish: Coil ke andar rakhi iron nail core ka kaam karti hai. Current ke time iron core khud magnetise ho jaata hai, aur uska magnetism coil ke field mein jud jaata hai, isliye compass zyada deflect hota hai aur coil zyada clips utha leti hai. Isliye practical electromagnets mein iron core hota hai. Core ke bina bhi coil magnet ki tarah kaam karti hai, par effect kamzor hota hai.
Q6. What is the heating effect of current? Why is nichrome used in heating appliances?
Answer (English): When current passes through a conductor, the conductor offers resistance and some electrical energy is converted into heat; this is the heating effect of electric current. Nichrome has a higher resistance than a copper wire of the same length and thickness, so for the same current it produces more heat. That is why nichrome is used for the heating element in heaters, irons, kettles and stoves.
Hinglish: Jab current conductor se guzarta hai to conductor resistance deta hai aur kuch electrical energy heat mein badal jaati hai; ise heating effect of electric current kehte hain. Same length aur thickness ki copper wire se nichrome ka resistance zyada hota hai, isliye same current par zyada heat deta hai. Isiliye heater, iron, kettle aur stove ke heating element mein nichrome use hota hai.
Q7. On what factors does the heat produced in a wire depend?
Answer (English): The heat produced depends on the magnitude of the current, so two cells produce more heat than one. It also depends on the material, thickness and length of the wire and on how long the current flows, which is why a thin nichrome wire heats quickly while a thick copper connecting wire stays cool under the same current.
Hinglish: Heat current ki magnitude par depend karta hai, isliye do cells ek se zyada heat dete hain. Ye wire ke material, uski thickness, length aur current kitni der tak flow karta hai, par bhi depend karta hai. Isliye patli nichrome wire jaldi garam hoti hai, jabki moti copper wire same current par thandi rehti hai.
Q8. Where is the heating effect of current used, and what safety care does it need?
Answer (English): The heating effect is used in room heaters, electric stoves, kettles, irons, immersion rods and hair dryers, and in an incandescent lamp where the filament glows. Industry uses electric furnaces to melt scrap steel. Because overheating can melt plastic parts and start fires, appliances should use wires, plugs and sockets rated for their current, and a hot element should never be touched or covered.
Hinglish: Heating effect room heater, stove, kettle, iron, immersion rod aur hair dryer mein use hota hai, aur incandescent lamp ke filament mein bhi. Industry mein electric furnace scrap steel pighlane ke liye use hota hai. Zyada garam hone se plastic pighal sakta hai aur aag lag sakti hai, isliye rated wires/plugs/sockets use karo aur garam element ko kabhi haath mat lagao.
Q9. How does a Voltaic cell produce electricity?
Answer (English): A Voltaic cell has two electrodes made of different metals, partly dipped in an electrolyte such as a weak acid or a salt solution. Between the electrodes and the electrolyte, a chemical reaction generates electricity. Once the circuit is closed, current leaves the positive terminal, travels around, and returns to the negative one. Over time the chemicals are exhausted and the cell becomes dead.
Hinglish: Voltaic cell mein do different metals ke electrodes hote hain jo electrolyte (weak acid ya salt solution) mein dube hote hain. Electrodes aur electrolyte ke beech chemical reaction se electricity banti hai. Circuit jodne par current positive terminal se circuit ke through negative terminal tak jaata hai. Samay ke saath chemicals khatam ho jaate hain aur cell dead ho jaati hai.
Q10. Differentiate between a dry cell and a rechargeable battery, and explain how old batteries should be disposed of.
Answer (English): A dry cell is a single-use cell with a zinc container, a carbon rod and a paste electrolyte; once its chemicals are used up, it cannot be recharged. A rechargeable battery can be charged and used many times, as in phones, laptops and electric vehicles. Even rechargeable batteries wear out, and all used batteries should go to an e-waste collection point because they may contain acids and metals that can harm the environment.
Hinglish: Dry cell single-use hoti hai, jismein zinc container, carbon rod aur paste electrolyte hota hai; ek baar use hone par recharge nahi hoti. Rechargeable battery baar-baar charge aur use ho sakti hai, jaise phone, laptop aur electric vehicles mein. Rechargeable batteries bhi purani ho jaati hain, aur sabhi purani batteries e-waste collection point par deni chahiye, kyunki unmein acids aur metals environment ko nuksan pahuncha sakte hain.
